Senior-less Jeannette baseball team up-and-down early on

Written by Brad Everett on .

In the world of high school baseball, the Jeannette Jayhawks don’t have any players eligible to join the AARP.

That’s because the Jayhawks don’t have a single senior. Their top 10 players consist of five juniors, two sophomores and three freshmen.

It would only make sense that the Jayhawks would experience some growing pains this season, a factor evident the first few weeks of the season as the team has yielded mixed results.

Jeanette is 3-3 overall, 0-2 in Class AA Section 4. In their three wins (against St. Joseph, Vincentian and East Allegheny), the Jayhawks have outscored their opponents, 33-14. But in their three losses (to Derry, Brentwood and Steel Valley), they have been outscored, 38-8.

The Jayhawks are led by junior shortstop Jordan Edmunds. As a junior, Edmunds hit a team-high .537 (22 for 41). Edmunds is one of the top all-around athletes at Jeannette. He was an all-conference linebacker and football and also played on the basketball team.

Other juniors seeing extended playing time are second baseman Jordan Nalevanko, pitcher/shortstop Garett Elliott, center fielder Anthony Canady and right fielder Colt Gnesoa.

The sophomore class includes catcher Mike Wise and right fielder Matt Howard, while the freshmen group includes left fielder Terell Canady, third baseman Zack Altieri and pitcher/first baseman Tony Mash.

In 2011, the Jayhawks finished 4-12 overall, 3-11 in section play.
