Hopewell baseball team faces lone long shot

Written by Sports Town on .

There was only one upset in the WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinals – Belle Vernon’s 7-1 win over Mars. Hopewell (18-3) will now get to see how the seventh-seeded Leopards (17-4) were able to pull that off and hope to avoid the same fate. The game will be played Monday at 5:00 at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington.

Hopewell reached the semifinals by edging Greensburg Salem 2-1 on a sixth inning suicide squeeze bunt and will attempt to reach the finals using the same combination of pitching, defense, and, to the surprise of no opponents, well-placed bunts.

Stefan Mrkonja was the winner in that game, improving his record to 6-1. He also leads the Vikings with four home runs.

The Vikings have now scored four runs or less in 10 of their 21 games but won nine of those 10. Only four times in 21 games have Hopewell opponents scored more than four runs.
