Blackhawk baseball team upends Hopewell

Written by Sports Town on .

Every time the Blackhawk and Hopewell baseball teams meet, whether it be in high school or American Legion competition, it’s an intense game.

The rivalry extends beyond just baseball as it was Hopewell that ended Blackhawk’s last basketball winning streaks and Blackhawk was the only football team to keep running back Rushel Shell under control but, in baseball, the rivalry is even more intense.

Last week, the two high school powers met again at Hopewell’s Joe Colella Field with both teams starting their aces – Stefan Mrkonja for Hopewell and Brendan McKay for Blackhawk. Hopewell led early but, led by a big hit by Ohio State-bound Matt Emge, Blackhawk came back to win 4-1. Hopewell won the first game 2-0.

The win leapfrogged Blackhawk over Hopewell into first place in Section 1-AAA but both teams have already qualified for the playoffs. Both teams will give any opponent a battle - until they play each other and that will be a real battle.
