Cristello playing at top of Highlands boys tennis team's lineup

Despite enduring a non-playoff season, first-year Highlands boys tennis team coach Sharon Thimons is excited about the future because of the strikes the Golden Rams made this year and the knowledge that the top three players are juniors and figure to return next year.

At the forefront of that is Joe Cristello, a junior who played first singles for Highlands this season.

"Joe is real consistent," Thimons said. "He keeps the ball in play. He has a real good eye for the ball and is able to follow the ball into the net real well and come up to the net and volley. He's been able to play some real good points against some of the really tough players we've faced, and we're hoping that next year he'll be able to beat some of those kids. He's come close and is just a strong offseason away from beating them."

Highlands had a chance to finish with a .500 season in Section 4-AA play. Cristello and junior Eric Bengel advanced to the quarterfinals of the section doubles tournament last week. Bengel typically plays second singles for the Golden Rams.
