Highlands softball team sitting in playoff position

Highlands snuck into the postseason last year with a 7-9 overall record and a 5-5 section mark. This year Highlands wants to move into the postseason with a head of steam.

So far the Golden Rams are playing over .500 baseball at 4-2 overall with all their games having been Class AAA Section 5 games. Highlands bounced back from a regular-season opening 4-3 loss at Mars to win three straight against Kittanning, Knoch and Indiana.

The Golden Rams fell 3-1 at Hampton but bounced back to win 6-3 at Knoch and sweep the season series.

Former Highlands basketball star Mason will transfer

2013 0317 Highlands Mason"Micah Mason, a Post-Gazette Fab 5 player at Highlands High School last season, intends to transfer closer to home after playing his freshman season at Drake in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Mason was fourth in NCAA Division I in 3-point shooting as a freshman, making 40 of 79 (50.6 percent). He finished the season averaging 5.4 points a game off the bench for Drake, which tied for seventh in the MVC.

He had a season-high 19 points against Eastern Illinois, a game in which he was 5 for 6 from 3-point range."
