PIAA playoff logistics exciting, challenging for Hempfield softball team
Monday is a big day for the seniors on the Hempfield softball team.
At 8 a.m. they will hop on a bus and begin a trek to State College. At 12:30 p.m. they will play on one of the premier softball facilities in the state at Penn State University for their PIAA first round game against Central Mountain.
Immediately after the game they will join their parents, hop in cars and drive back home to get ready to graduate high school later that evening.
“The team is kind of perked up to play at the new stadium,” coach Bob Kalp said. “With our graduation Monday night I was thinking the game would be closer but I am fine with going up to Penn State. They gave us the first game, so our seniors can make it to graduation no problem.”
The early wakeup call could cause some problems for the entire team.
“The dynamics are different, you got a couple hour bus ride and it is early in the morning,” Kalp said. “(Sunday) at practice you can tell some of them had just rolled out of bed and rolled into practice. We can’t have that (Monday). They need to get up early enough, eat a good meal because at 12:30 they will be expected to play.”
