Challenging season ends for Hempfield baseball team

Written by Brad Everett on .

Hempfield was tested many times in the regular season and passed most of them.

Unfortunately for Spartans, one day after winning a squeaker in their playoff opener, they saw their season end.

Hempfield finished its season with a 16-6 record after losing to North Allegheny, 10-0, in the WPIAL Class AAAA quarterfinals. One day earlier, the fourth-seeded Spartans scored four runs in the eighth inning to top Franklin Regional, 10-8, in a first-round game.

Despite the loss, the season should be considered a successful one for the Spartans, who maneuvered their way through a tough schedule. They closed Section 2 play with a 9-3 record, placing them behind only then-undefeated Norwin, which earned the top seed in the playoffs. Along the way, the Spartans picked up quality non-section wins against the likes of North Allegheny, Central Catholic, Upper St. Clair and Gateway.

The Spartans were led by sophomore Joey DeFloria, who led the team in hitting (.500), home runs (five), RBIs (27) and runs (24) during the regular season.
