"As Hempfield Area sophomore Jasmine Jones leaned across the finish line in the 400-meter relay at the WPIAL individual championships last Thursday, she said she thought she had done enough to claim the gold medal for the Spartans.
Of course, in a race decided by 0.08 seconds, it was impossible to tell for sure.
"I kind of felt it because I didn't feel [anyone else's] presence around me," Jones said. "It felt pretty good."
Jones intuition was correct. Her and her teammates finished in 48.56 seconds, just good enough to beat out Mt. Lebanon's 48.68 for the gold medal.
Jones was behind in the race when she took the baton for the final leg, but said she knew she had the ability to catch up to the pack."
