Bates a one-person wrecking crew as Hempfield softball team advances
Hempfield senior catcher Alyssa Bates knocked in all three Hempfield runs in the Spartan’s 3-0 shutout win over North Allegheny.
The win sends Hempfield to the WPIAL quarterfinals for the first time since 2009 when it won a WPIAL championship.
Hempfield was bounced in the WPIAL quarterfinals by Shaler in 2010 and upset in the WPIAL quarterfinals by Seneca Valley last season after receiving a first-round bye.
The Spartans had much better luck against a team from Section 3-AAAA this season. Hempfield became only the second team to shutout North Allegheny this season. The Tigers threatened in the seventh inning by loading the bases with no outs but junior pitcher Hope Pehrson got her team out of trouble and into the WPIAL semifinals where it will face Peters Township on Wednesday.
