Written by Brad Everett on .

Name: Joey DeFloria
High School: Hempfield
Grade: 10
Sport: Baseball
Position: Outfielder

Background info: DeFloria might only be a sophomore, but he is the undisputed offensive star for one of the top teams in Class AAAA. The Spartans open the WPIAL playoffs today with a first-round game against Franklin Regional at Gateway. DeFloria leads the Spartans in hitting (.500), home runs (five), RBIs (27), runs (24) and walks (18). A season ago, DeFloria played in only six games because of a hip injury. Among his highlights this season is a two-home run, five-RBI effort in a win at Penn-Trafford. DeFloria is also a standout running back for the Hempfield football team.

Coach Tim Buzzard said: “He’s very talented and definitely has a lot of upside. As a hitter, he has great plate discipline. He has very good bat speed, as well. He runs very well. He’s got a strong arm and is a good outfielder. The biggest thing is that he’s very focused during the game. He really concentrates and never takes an at-bat off.”
