Written by Cara DeCarlo on .

The Hempfield girls proved by leaps and bounds (literally) that they were their bracket’s only choice for the WPIAL finals. Last Wednesday at home, the Lady Spartans faced Elizabeth Forward, Laurel Highlands, and Oakland Catholic. Of all the teams competing, Oakland’s score came closest to Hempfield’s. And Hempfield beat Oakland Catholic 124-25.

The Hempfield boys’ team had a good competition of its own last Wednesday. The Spartans competed against Central Catholic, Fox Chapel, and Laurel Highlands. While the Hempfield boys’ posted definitive  wins over Laurel Highlands (95-55) and Central Catholic (112-37), Fox Chapel gave Hempfield a run for its’ money. With a final score of 88-62, Hempfield beat Fox Chapel by approximately two swept events, a first, and a third. When you consider a total of 18 events to be scored, the score between the Fox Chapel boys and the Hempfield boys was close.

As both the Hempfield boys’ and girls’ teams head to Baldwin tomorrow, they will rely on their strong points. For the girls, depth and strength exists across all events on the track and field.  Pole vaulter Larisa Debich achieved a US#3 mark of 13-0.25 at the Baldwin invitational last The Hempfield boys’ team is also quite deep. A few recent strengths have been seen in the jumps (De’ Lorian Day – triple jump), throws (Max Adams- shot put, discus), sprints (Joe Borsuk), and distance races (John Faye). All of the above athletes placed or achieved top ten results in events at the Baldwin Invitational last Friday.
