Martinelli, DeFloria making things happen for Hempfield baseball team

Written by Brad Everett on .

Hempfield is on the verge of clinching a WPIAL playoff spot, and an excellent pitcher and outstanding hitter are leading the way.

Junior pitcher Zach Martinelli and sophomore outfielder Joey DeFloria are two of the biggest reasons why Hempfield sports an excellent 13-4 record. The Spartans are 7-2 in section play, placing them behind only Norwin (9-0), and ahead of Penn-Trafford (6-4) and Latrobe (5-4).

Martinelli has been the undisputed pitching ace for the Spartans. He leads the team in wins, one coming on a no-hitter at Connellsville Monday when he had nine strikeouts.

DeFloria continues to pace the offensive attack. He leads the Spartans in hitting, home runs and RBIs. DeFloria had one of his biggest games of the season in a 23-7 win at Penn-Trafford, a game in which he hit two home runs and had five RBIs.
