Hampton boys tennis team bids farewell to five seniors

Written by Chris Adamski on .

The end of another successful season for the Hampton tennis team means the end of the high school careers for five Talbots seniors.

Hampton was the WPIAL Class AA team runner-up, and the team advanced to the PIAA quarterfinals at the Hershey Racquet Club before a 3-2 loss to eventual finalist Wyoming Seminary of District 2.

Senior captain Paul Scherer played first doubles for the Talbots this season, and senior Robert Hedges was at second doubles. Ryan Gallagher, Erik Millstine and Tommy Jones also were starters at many points this season and in seasons past.

"Paul gave steady leadership all the time," Hampton coach Grant McKinney said. "He really set the tone for practice. His leadership, skill and confidence will be missed.

"Robert, starting at 2 doubles, was a fiery, passionate player. You'd always hear him screaming, 'Let's go!' after winning a point. Having him in the lineup pumped up his teammates.

"The other three seniors... were the personality of the team. It was a likable group of young men with a lot of character who were positive role models to the younger players."
