Hampton baseball team ready for playoffs after poor start
The regular season was almost two weeks old by the time the Hampton baseball team had picked up its first victory.
That's a distant memory now for the Talbots.
After an 0-4 start to the season, Hampton is 9-2 since. The Talbots carry a four-game winning streak into their WPIAL Class AAA playoff opener against Mount Pleasant 4 p.m. today at Fox Chapel.
The Talbots (13-6) finished a half-game back of Mars in the Section 4-AAA standings. A WPIAL finalist last season, Hampton is the No. 5 seed in the playoffs this season.
Juniors Brandon Marsonek and Joe Vita were Hampton's top starting pitchers this season. Each won four games. Sophomore Ben Vey had a team-high 27 RBIs.
Mount Pleasant (10-4) came in third place in Section 2-AAA with a 10-4 section record. The Vikings lost three of their final four regular season games and are in the playoffs for the first time since being a WPIAL semifinalist in 2010.
Mount Pleasant had three pitchers win four games this season: Seniors Zac Heide (4-2) and Shane Hertzog (4-2) and sophomore Tyler Mellors (4-1). Heide had a team-high .509 batting average (27 hits in 53 at bats).
