Hampton boys basketball team having fun in the postseason

Written by Chris Adamski on .

"We're having a lot of fun right now."

Words from Hampton boys basketball coach Joe Lafko. And why shouldn't the Talbots be enjoying themselves? After all, there one of only a handful of boys basketball teams left still playing in the state. And they're one victory away from playing for a PIAA Class AAA championship.

Hampton (25-4) plays Montour 7 p.m. today at North Allegheny High School in the PIAA semifinals. It a rematch of a WPIAL semifinal won by Hampton, 52-42, Feb. 28. The Talbots have beaten every Class AAA team they have played this season except for one (New Castle, which beat them twice -- including in the WPIAL title game).

"I'm very proud of our team, very proud of the way they show resiliency when other teams make runs at us," Lafko said. "We use the old cliché, 'We bend but we don't break.' That's a good sign of maturity, and in those close games, what we consider still a pretty young team -- many times we have two sophomores, two freshmen and a senior on the floor -- to have the young guys step up and make some plays, it's gratifying."
