Hampton faces Johnstown in PIAA boys basketball second round
The only Class AAA opponent the Hampton boys basketball team has lost to this season is still undefeated. Tonight, the Talbots face a team that is almost that.
Hampton (23-4) plays District 6 champion Johnstown (23-2) in a PIAA Class AAA boys basketball second-round tournament game 7:30 p.m. at Hempfield Area High School.
The WPIAL runner-up Talbots have lost to 27-0 New Castle twice this season, including in the WPIAL title game March 2. (Hampton's other two losses are to Class AAAA competition).
The Trojans have lost only once to a Class AAA team this season. They've won 19 of their past 20 overall (the only defeat coming to Class AAAA State College), including a 72-64 victory against Somerset in the District 6 championship game March 1 and a 69-53 win against Mars this past Friday. The Planets are a section rival of Hampton's.
Johnstown's leading scorer is senior swingman Dwight Andrews at 18 points per game. Senior forward Alkwan Williams (15.8 points per game), junior point guard Phillip Madison (13.7) and senior guard Mark Watson (11.8) also can contribute offensively. The 6-2, 220-pound Williams averages a team-high 11.2 rebounds, and Watson (5.7) and Madison (5.0) are the team's tops in steals.
The winner of tonight's game advances to play the winner of the Archbishop Carroll-Octorara contest that is also being played tonight. That quarterfinal will be Friday at a time and site to be determined.
