Hampton wrestling coach wins 200th match

Written by Ken Wunderley on .

Hampton's Joe Bursick became the 30th coach in WPIAL history to reach 200 victories with the Talbots 70-9 victory against Baldwin on Friday.

The win came a little later than Bursick had hoped, as the Talbots suffered a 32-31 loss to Butler on Wednesday in a match that decided the top spot in Class AAA Section 3A.

Bursick is one of six current coaches with 200 wins. The others are: Kiski Area's Chuck Tursky, Fox Chapel's Ron Frank, Avonworth's Tim Giel, Butler's Scott Stoner, Latrobe's Marc Billett. Tursky recently broke the WPIAL record and enters the week with 456 wins.

Burgettstown's Terry Havelka is next in line to reach 200 wins. The Blue Devils have a 3-3 mark this season, which gives Havelka a 196-81 record. He will have a chance to reach the milestone on Saturday at the Chartiers Valley Duals, as the Blue Devils will face five opponents.
