Pair of freshmen from Hampton qualify for WPIAL tennis doubles tournament

There are only five freshmen taking part in either the WPIAL Class AA or Class AAA doubles tournaments that begin today. Only three are in Class AAA. And two of them are on one team.

Hampton's Lucy Gloniger and Rachel Harrison teamed up to place third in what is a very competitive section. Section 2-AAA contains Pine-Richland and North Allegheny, each of which has produced PIAA tournament-caliber players in recent years. But a pair of Hampton freshmen broke through.

Gloniger and Harrison, coincidentally, will play the team that has the WPIAL tournament's other freshman, Peters Township's Sara Komer. Komer and sophomore Stephanie Smith are the No. 3 seed.

The tournament is scheduled to begin 1 p.m. today at Keystone Oaks High School. The quarterfinals and semifinals also will be there, with the final and third-place match tomorrow at North Allegheny.
