Hampton boys' lacrosse team's first year in Division I ends

Written by Joe Koch on .

It was a year of firsts for the Hampton High boys lacrosse program.

Under first-year coach Randy Burns, the Talbots finished with a 10-6 record and advanced to the WPIAL's Division I playoffs after years of unqualified success in Division II under previous coach Greg Edleman.

The Talbots had a tough draw in the playoffs, taking on Peters Township, a team the Talbots had played against evenly during the regular season before falling, 5-4.

Hampton baseball team cruises to section title

Scoring runs on the Hampton Area baseball team was quite the challenge for most opposing teams this season.

Ranked No. 3 in Class AAA by the Post-Gazette, the Talbots (17-3, 10-0) finished the regular season riding an eight-game winning streak since losing a 1-0 exhibition game against top-ranked Class AAAA Seneca Valley on April 22. Hampton also posted five shutout wins during the regular season and surrendered just 10 runs in its past 10 games.

“We stress that if we throw strikes and play good defense, we’re going to win games,” Hampton coach Matt Torrence said. “Our pitching is going to carry us. If we hit like we’re capable of, we’re going to do well.”

After all, a trip to the postseason was all but a given for the team in previous seasons. The Talbots had won three of the first four WPIAL Division II championships and finished second in 2010.

Trips to the postseason were not the only motivation for Hampton. The Talbots wanted to see if they could compete against a higher level of competition. And under first-year coach Randy Burns, Hampton is poised to advance to the WPIAL Division I tournament this month.

Hampton softball team rebounds nicely from a very shaky start

Written by Nicholas Tolomeo on .

Nick Tolomeo's feature on the Hampton softball team:

"Teetering on the verge of a disastrous 0-4 start in section play, one of Hampton's senior leaders made a plea to her teammates.

Her teammates answered that plea with a resounding response and Hampton salvaged its season.

After losing its first three games of the season, Hampton was trailing, 5-0, in the top of the sixth inning at Knoch. An 0-4 start in Class AAA Section 5 could have very well meant a premature end to postseason aspirations.

Coming off the field after the bottom of the fifth inning, senior outfielder Paige Paskorz was visibly irritated."
