Greensburg Salem boys track team playoff ready after escaping Franklin Regional
“Our section meets are over and our boys finished second in the section,” explained Coach Lehman of Greensburg Salem track and football. The Golden Lions boys’ team is 5-1, the only loss coming at the hands of Hempfield. But it should be noted that Greensburg Salem’s win over Section 1-AAA opponent Franklin Regional last Tuesday was close. The Lions boys beat the Panthers 78-72 as the Panthers teams dominated Indiana and the Greensburg girls’ team in the other portions of the meet.
So, how does the Greensburg Salem team like to score points for such a win? “We’re pretty strong in the jumps,” said Lehman. Julian Thompson, the Lions’ inside man from the basketball court, broke the school record in the triple jump. Lehman noted Thompson triple-jumped a 46-4.5, but he also said that the Greensburg Salem team has four boys who are able to register triple jumps in the vicinity of 40 feet. “The same guys can get 20 feet in the long jump,” Lehman added.
As for the Lions’ girls, they beat Indiana 95-55 last Tuesday and lost 82-68 to Franklin. The win over Indiana is the Greensburg Salem girls’ team’s only section win, but they did post a non-section win over Yough. According to Lehman, the girls are showing many strengths to build upon. “Kathy Shepherd, as a sophomore, broke the school record in pole vault,” Lehman said. Lehman also cited Courtney McQuade for the girls’ team. In the past, McQuade has posted solid numbers in sprinting events.
Lastly, we can’t mention Greensburg Salem without another nod to Terry Jackson. Jackson has posted winning results for the boys’ 110-meter hurdles at the South Hills Classic, the Butler Invitational, and other events. According to Lehman, Jackson’s drive is borne out of completion with school record holder Austin Taylor. Taylor graduated from Greensburg Salem last year, but the longtime competition between Jackson and Taylor lives on as Jackson strives to break Taylor’s record. Note that Jackson’s time in the 110-meter hurdles at Butler was 14.76 seconds.
Greensburg Salem is scheduled next for the WCCA meet this Saturday.
