Top-seeded Greensburg Salem softball team avoids first-round scare

Written by Nick Tolomeo on .

Greensburg Salem was one of the most dominant teams in the WPIAL during the regular season but none of that mattered on Thursday when the Golden Lions had their backs up against the wall in a WPIAL first-round matchup.

The top-seeded Golden Lions (18-2) found themselves trailing No. 16 Highlands (8-7) and on the verge of a potentially historic upset. Greensburg Salem had won more games (18) than Highlands had played all season (15). Greensburg Salem had one of the best pitcher/catcher batteries in the WPIAL with pitcher Jayne Oberdorf and catcher Taylor Mehan.

Greensburg-Salem’s Leo and Mason clutch in 81-68 win over Penn-Trafford

Written by Cara De Carlo on .

“We thought going in that it was going to be close,” Greensburg-Salem head track coach Bob Lehman recalled about the Lions’ April 9 win over Penn-Trafford. “We just ended up getting some points in some events we didn’t think we would get.”

Greensburg’s Brady Mason had been thought to be evenly matched in the pole vault with Penn-Trafford. But Mason ended up vaulting his best at the time (11-6). He also took third place in the javelin that day, scoring another point for Greensburg.

“Our 400 guy, Joe Leo, is new this year – it’s his first year out,” continued Lehman. Leo, a junior, ended up winning the event.

Greensburg Salem played its first game on April 3.

A week later, the Golden Lions were 0-5.

Greensburg Salem is now trying to put the early struggles in its rearview mirror. The Golden Lions began to do that when they won at Mount Pleasant, 2-1, last Friday. The Golden Lions (1-5 overall, 1-3 in Class AAA Section 2) hoped to keep them momentum going when they hosted Uniontown yesterday.
