Magical run ends for Gateway girls' soccer team and star Seneca
Carly Seneca, arguably the top player in the 27-year history of Gateway girls’ soccer, entered her senior year with only one playoff win.
The Gators stumbled in the WPIAL first round in 2009 and 2011. In 2010 they could not get past the WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinals.
But in Seneca’s final season, Gateway reached the WPIAL semifinals for the first time in program history.
It was a memorable season for Gateway. It went 16-5-1 overall and 11-0-1 in Section 3-AAA to win the section title.
It shut out North Allegheny 3-0 in the first round of the playoffs and then knocked off Canon-McMillan 2-1 in the quarterfinals thanks to two goals from Seneca.
But Gateway lost to eventual WPIAL champion Peters Township 3-0 in the semifinals and then fell short of the program’s first state tournament berth when it lost 3-1 to Bethel Park in the third-place game.
