Gateway football star Woodson heading to Arizona

Written by Brad Everett on .

Before Thomas Woodson had even started a varsity game at Gateway, Gators coach Terry Smith was touting him as a future Division I quarterback.

Smith’s prophecy has come to fruition.

Woodson, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior, verbally committed to the University of Arizona this past weekend. Woodson passed for more than 1,100 yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior, his third season as a starter. He helped the Gators reach the WPIAL Class AAAA quarterfinals.

At Arizona, Woodson will play for first-year head coach Rich Rodriguez, who previously coached at West Virginia and Michigan.

Woodson becomes the third WPIAL player to commit to Arizona this year. Upper St. Clair linebacker Dakota Conwell and Chartiers Valley wide receiver Wayne Capers – each of whom will be freshmen at Arizona this fall – signed on with the Wildcats in February.

The commitment puts a happy ending to what was a difficult year for Woodson. A year ago this week, Woodson was shot in the leg while with his teammates in Durham, N.C. on their way to a football camp in Florida. Woodson’s teammate, Darrell Turner, was killed in the shooting.
