Gateway baseball team set to take on North Allegheny
A playoff matchup between Gateway and North Allegheny is usually reserved for the football field, but the schools will meet on the baseball diamond tonight in a WPIAL Class AAAA first-round playoff game at the Burkett Complex in Robinson Township.
Gateway (9-9) qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2009 after winning its final two Section 4 games, one coming against section co-champion Plum and the other against Kiski Area. The latter was a 9-0 triumph which clinched Gateway a playoff berth. The Gators are in search of their first playoff win in more than a decade.
While the Gators are thrilled to be in the playoffs, a matchup with talented North Allegheny (11-9) could potentially end their season. The Tigers might not sport a great record, but they finished in second place in an always-tough Section 1, and seven of their losses came by three or fewer runs. The Tigers have given up more than three runs just once in their past 11 games.
The schools also played each other in last fall’s WPIAL football semifinals, a game won by North Allegheny, 21-17.
