Gateway track teams to host semis, girls had been wondering about Hempfield
The Gators track teams had been hoping to host their bracket of the WPIAL team semifinals today. They got their wish.
According to head coach Tom LaBuff, the Gateway girls’ team had additional questions going into the postseason. “They want to know if they get Hempfield in the first round,” LaBuff had said just before the brackets were out. The Gateway girls’ track team carries immense respect for the depth and skill of Hempfield. As it turns out, the Hempfield girls will be hosting their own bracket.
As for the boys, their questions leading up to today were wide open. “Who are we running or competing against on Wednesday?” had been the most common one. It came largely from athletes Gateway depends upon to move around to different events. A couple examples LaBuff gave were senior sprinter Aaron Barlow and Tyler Palinchak, Gateway’s best boys’ distance runner.
“I think they’re quietly confident,” said LaBuff about his team. He explained that their questions were really about just wanting to know what was going on with the team semifinals. “Other than that, I think they’re just excited.”
