The Freeport Board of School Directors selected Freeport High School (FHS) junior varsity basketball coach Paul Sylba as the next FHS girls' varsity basketball coach at last night's meeting. Sylba will start his second girls' head coaching tenure after serving as the Riverview girls' varsity basketball coach from 2001-2009.

During his nine years at Riverview, Sylba compiled a 114-94 record. In 2005, he led Riverview to the WPIAL Section 4-AA title and was selected Section Coach of the Year. His team qualified for the WPIAL and PIAA playoffs that season, along with reaching the WPIAL playoffs in four other seasons.

Sylba has served as an assistant girls' varsity basketball coach the last three years. Last season he was an assistant at Freeport and the two previous years an assistant at Kiski. He gained additional coaching experiece as the Riverview boys' junior high basketball coach from 1985-2001, the Women's Collegiate Shooting Stars Summer League coach for one year, and coach of the AK Valley Cager Classic for two years, winning both games.

Sylba is excited to oversee a girls' basketball program again.

“I'm honored that the Board and administration has confidence in my ability to lead the Freeport girls' basketball program. I'm thrilled to continue my involvement and be associated with this great group of young ladies. My goal is to produce successful teams with proficient basketball players, and more importantly, outstanding young women representative of the high values of the Freeport community.”

Sylba replaces Bill Burkart, who was the girls' varsity basketball coach for the last five years.
