Franklin Regional football team still on the prowl
With all the teams making news in Class AAA this season, the Franklin Regional football team hasn’t been one of them.
Playing quietly in the shadows behind Mars and even Hampton in the Greater Allegheny Conference during the regular season, the Panthers are 8-2 and have found themselves in the WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinals. Entering the postseason bracket seeded No. 8, Franklin Regional will face No. 1 Thomas Jefferson at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Elizabeth Forward High School.
The last time these two teams met was in the 2009 quarterfinals and the Jaguars earned a 27-14 victory.
The Panthers are coming off a 44-7 win last week against Elizabeth Forward. Star tailback Dane Brown, who was the second-leading rusher in the WPIAL last year and was injuried early on in this season, rushed for 140 yards and four touchdowns on 22 carries. Brown reached the 4,000-yard rushing plateau and enters this game with 4,084 career yards.
Charan Singh also scored a pair of touchdowns for the Panthers, one on a 4-yard pass from quarterback Nico Lodovico, and the other on a 70-yard interception return. Lodovico completed 7 of 11 pass attempts for 89 yards.
Thomas Jefferson (10-0) enters the quarterfinals following a 63-19 rout of Hollidaysburg. Zach Talley and Luke Deanovich each scored a pair of touchdowns for the Jaguars. Talley had a 70-yard kickoff return and then returned a punt 61 yards for another score. Deanovich rushed for his touchdowns and scored on runs of 25 and 41 yards.
