Franklin Regional’s Montgomery comments on Century players in PIAA soccer tournament

Written by Cara DeCarlo on .

Many are aware that soccer season ended for the Panthers in the WPIAL quarterfinal round against Canon-McMillan on October 25. However, the story has a forked ending.

On one branch, Franklin Regional players are re-entering fall/winter training and other soccer organizations.

“For the classic teams (U15 and above) high school players cannot part until they’ve completed their school season,” explained head coach Ryan Montgomery. Montgomery also coaches with the city’s prominent Century United club. He noted that because this is a time of year when some club players are still playing varsity and others have finished, club staffs often use the time to put together new rosters.

In the meantime, the Franklin players are busy. “We’ll put together a nice offseason program where we’ll do some weight training and soccer training,” said Montgomery.

Montgomery even noted that two of Franklin’s players, Mike and Jake Roberge, are entering their season of national youth soccer, which begins in mid-November. The Roberges will travel all over the country to play in weekend tournaments. Locally, the Roberges play their club soccer with Beadling.

The other branch of the fork in this story involves Montgomery’s club coaching with Century. The experience has allowed him to meet, coach, and learn about many of the soccer players who are entering the PIAA tournament today.

“[Upper St. Clair’s] Wes Burdette’s done a great job,” said Montgomery. He used to be a century player.”

Montgomery also mentioned Upper St. Clair’s Robbie Mertz. “He’s a sophomore this year, plays for a really good Century team, and this year he’s doing a really good job in midfield for Upper St. Clair,” said Montgomery.

Montgomery noted that Canon-McMillan’s Nick Sodini has been a special threat this season. “He did a dynamic job against us in the playoffs.”
