Supporting cast steps up for Franklin Regional football team
Senior running back Dane Brown has carried the Franklin Regional football team since his sophomore season, but with Brown sidelined by an ankle injury last Friday, his teammates proved they were more than capable of picking up the load.
Quarterback Nico Lodovico shined for the second week in a row and a running-back-by-committee approach paid off in helping Franklin Regional (2-1, 2-1) win at visiting Highlands, 35-3, in a Class AAA Greater Allegheny Conference game.
Lodovico threw touchdowns passes to Colin Janov and Carter Henderson, and added a 47-yard touchdown run. The excellent performance came a week after Lodovico passed for 282 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for yet another touchdown in a 35-0 triumph against Indiana.
Against Highlands, the three-headed monster of Nick Vento, Paul Emanuele and Brett Zanotto combined to rush for 145 yards and two touchdowns. Emanuele scored on a 1-yard run and Zanotto scored from 26 yards out.
Franklin Regional has successfully rebounded from a 21-17 Week 1 loss to Mars. Next up for the Panthers is a conference matchup against Greensburg Salem (1-2, 1-2) on Friday. Brown is questionable for that game.
