Rough season for Franklin Regional boys lacrosse team
It's been nearly a month since the Franklin Regional High boys lacrosse team has won a game. And unless the 5-7 Panthers can defeat the University of Detroit Jesuit in a non-section game today, the 2012 season will end a disappointing season that began with so much promise.
Franklin Regional began the season with a five successive victories, including victories over No. 10 Hampton (9-6) and No. 7 North Allegheny (7-6) in overtime.
But since that victory over the Tigers on April 11, Franklin Regional has been in the throes of a seven-game losing streak that has featured one-goal losses to Thomas Worthingon (8-7) and Pine-Richland (8-7) and successive losses to No. 2 Mt. Lebanon (9-6), No. 1 Seneca Valley (12-6) and No. 3 Sewickley Academy (14-5).
The Panthers, however, do have playoff hopes. Seneca Valley leads WPIAL Division 1, Section 2 with a 5-0 record, while Pine-Richland and Shady Side Academy share second place with 3-2 records. Franklin Regional and North Allegheny share fourth place with 2-3 marks. The top four teams advance to the eight-team playoffs. The only team out of contention is 0-5 Fox Chapel.
