Franklin Regional boys lacrosse team hopes to snap skid
Franklin Regional High began the 2012 season with the high hopes that come with a five-game winning streak that included victories over No. 10 Hampton (9-6) and No. 8 North Allegheny (7-6).
But losses to Ohio opponents Upper Arlington (15-4) and Thomas Worthington (8-7) have steamrolled into a five-game losing streak with successive setbacks to No. 5 Pine-Richland (8-7), Shady Side Academy (7-4) and No. 2 Mt. Lebanon (9-6).
Three games remain for the 5-5 Panthers, and the prospects for a sixth victory might be slim with road contests looming against No. 1 Seneca Valley (12-1) on Wednesday and No. 3 Sewickley Academy (9-2) on Friday. The regular season concludes with a home game next Sunday against University of Detroit Jesuit.
How frustrating has this five-game skid been for the Panthers? Well, only one of the losses could be one-sided, and that was the 15-4 loss to Upper Arlington. All of the other setbacks have been by three goals or fewer including successive 8-7 losses to Thomas Worthington and Pine-Richland. The losses to Shady Side Academy (7-4) and Mt. Lebanon (9-6) were also close setbacks.
Still, Franklin Regional finds itself in a second-place tie with Pine-Richland, North Allegheny and Shady Side Academy in Division 1, Section 2. A victory over Seneca Valley, which leads the section with a 4-0 mark, would greatly help the Panthers' playoff hopes.
