Lacrosse: Slow start dooms Franklin Regional in PIAA play-in game

Written by Joe Koch on .

The one thing a coach hopes for is a quick start in a game, no matter how meaningful it is.

Franklin Regional coach Eric Barnabei had hoped for such a scenario when his team lined up to play Quaker Valley in the WPIAL Class 2A consolation game this past Thursday at Robert Morris.

But that dreamed was dashed as the Quakers -- still smarting over a 10-9 loss to Oakland Catholic in a WPIAL semifinal that ruined a perfect season -- scored six of the game's first seven goals and rolled to a 12-5 victory over the Panthers.

"[Playing from behind] is not our game," Barnabei said. "That took the wind out of our sails. We [scored] a couple of goals, and they did a good job answering those goals every time we scored. That kept the momentum going their way."

It likely was one of the best lacrosse games -- boys or girls -- played this season.

And the two teams involved with that classic -- Hampton and Franklin Regional -- will meet again in a WPIAL Class 2A girls semifinal at 6 p.m. Monday at North Allegheny High School.

The winner of that game will meet the winner of the other semifinal between Quaker Valley and Oakland Catholic that will be played at the same venue at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the WPIAL Class 2A championship game.

But ... a look back at the 13-12 overtime non-section thriller that host Hampton won over Franklin Regional on April 27.

Contraguerro was a section champion in 2016 and section and Westmoreland County runner-up as a senior.
