Fox Chapel's Short, McCullough out for PIAA boys tennis doubles crown
Their team was a WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinalist. The two of them played against each other for a berth in the WPIAL singles tournament. Together, they were WPIAL finalists.
Junior Ben Short and sophomore Dylan McCullough teamed up to advance to the WPIAL Class AAA championship match. They earned a PIAA tournament berth as a result. Today, they head to Hershey.
Short and McCullough open up play at the Hershey Racquet Club 1:30 p.m. today against Igor Ivanov and Richard Lichtenwalner of Parkland in a first-round match. Ivanov and Lichtenwalner are the District 11 champions.
"It's the best of the best," Fox Chapel coach David Prevost said. "But they served well (at the WPIAL tournament) -- especially (over the first three rounds). Of course, they'll play a tough opponent in the first rounds, someone that can make you look bad if you're not at the top of your game.
"But they were in making that run to the WPIAL championship (match) and in qualifying for states. They really hit the ball well and did a good job."
