Fox Chapel girls basketball team opens with a big challenge

Written by Joe Koch on .

There are times when a basketball team might want to start out a season with an easy game or two. That's not the case with the Fox Chapel girls' team this season.

Fox Chapel, coming off a fourth-place finish in WPIAL Section 2-AAAA with a record of 7-5 and an overall record of 11-12 in 2010-11, travels to Wexford on Dec. 12 for its season opener with North Allegheny. The Foxes, like the Tigers, qualified for the WPIAL playoffs last season.

Fox Chapel fell to neighboring rival and eventual WPIAL champion Shaler in a first-round game, 60-32. The Foxes' top returning player is Erin Mathias, a 6-3 sophomore center who averaged 10.7 points a game a year ago.

North Allegheny finished with a 20-4 overall record last year, and placed third in Section 3-AAAA behind Shaler and Oakland Catholic with a 9-3 record.

The Tigers have a relatively young team with just three seniors on a preseason roster that featured 20 players, 10 of them sophomores. The rest of the roster is made up of three juniors and four freshmen.

Alexis Aiken, a senior guard, earned all-section honors last year. She averaged 12.5 points a game.
