Fort Cherry throwers win WPIAL championships

Joe Koch has the story of how Fort Cherry throwers Jessie Merckle and Sean Darragh (among others) had success in the WPIAL championships:

"A lot of champions were crowned at last Thursday's WPIAL track and field championships at Baldwin High School.

Perhaps most thrilled with their success were the Fort Cherry High School athletes, coaches and fans as the school brought home titles in both the boys and girls Class AA competition in the javelin.

"I think it's awesome," said Jessie Merckle, who will compete in her fourth PIAA Class AA championship meet at Shippensburg University on Friday and Saturday.

"We don't have a track at Fort Cherry, but we have such talented javelin throwers. I love to practice with them, and I'm glad they're competing with me at the state meet.""
