Blue-haired Ellwood City baseball team ties for section title
The Ellwood City team's players had their hair cut in a Mohawk style and had the Mohawk dyed blue as part of a year-end tradition and the drastic style change was enough to break a 21-inning scoreless streak against archrival Riverside.
The Wolverines prevailed, 13-3, in a five-inning game that left Riverside and Ellwood City tied for the section championship with 12-2 records.
“This should give us a boost in the seedings,” said Ellwood City second baseman Greg Lynn, who had four hits in four at bats, driving in four runs and scoring three. “It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t, though, we feel as though we can beat anyone.”
Ellwood City now has an 18-2 record and Riverside, the defending WPIAL and PIAA Class AA champion, a 16-4 record so both have reason to hope for a favorable seed. The loss stopped an eight-game Riverside winning streak and extended Ellwood City’s to five.
