Ellwood City baseball team look to avoid ties
Last year, Ellwood City tied for a playoff spot, but didn’t reach the postseason because it was eliminated on tiebreakers. This year, the Wolverines are ensuring the scenario doesn’t repeat.
Friday, Anthony Carusone allowed third-place Laurel just one run and had two hits himself as the Wolverines won, 4-1. The win came after a tough stretch as Ellwood City had lost two of three games after winning 12 straight.
Now the Wolverines are in firm control of second place after Monday’s 12-2 win over Beaver Falls. Ellwood City, now 15-2 overall and 9-2 in Section 5-AA, need only one win or one Shenango loss to clinch a playoff spot. More importantly for Ellwood City fans, though, the Wolverines remain just one game behind Riverside, setting up the regular season finale for the section title.
