Ellwood City boys tennis has plenty of junior achievment

Written by Chris Adamski on .

Six of the top eight players on the Ellwood City boys tennis team are juniors.

Three-year starter Matt Barnes plays first singles, Beau Ewing is at third singles, R.J. Leisie teams with senior Jonathan Pogozelec at first doubles and Michael Brown teams with either Aaron Franz or Matt Maielli in what is always an all-junior second doubles team.

Team captain Scott Lewis is the senior who plays highest in the lineup. Although he will be missed, the rest of the Wolverines form a nice nucleus for future seasons.

"I've seen improvement in all the kids throughout the year," coach Keith Golebie said. "In practice they've been working hard. We have our six juniors hopefully coming back next year that will make us strong, and we're hoping that the freshmen continue to work in the offseason and continue the progress they have made so far. We're hoping for some new people coming out next year and getting interested and getting involved. We're hoping to continue to build the program."

Golebie wanted to acknowledge the contributions of volunteer assistants Lisa Barnes (the mother of Matt), Kim Conti (coach of the Wolverines' girls team) and Jeremy Shen (from Geneva College).

"They've been a tremendous help for us this season," Golebie said.
