Ellis School lacrosse team has big challenge against Shaler

Written by Joe Koch on .

The Ellis School has one of the smallest enrollments of WPIAL member schools.

But the Tigers always field competitive teams in field hockey and lacrosse. Ellis is constantly playing against schools with larger enrollments, but the Tigers always are competitive.

It's no different this season as Ellis finished the regular season with a 10-6 record and 10-5 against WPIAL Division 2, Section 1 competition and qualified for the WPIAL playoffs as the No. 4 team from its section.

The season didn't appear too promising at the outset as the Tigers lost four of their first five games, including a 20-0 thrashing from No. 3 Shady Side Academy in the season opener. But Ellis mounted winning streaks of five games and four games, respectively, to secure a position in the WPIAL playoffs.

The Tigers visit Shaler Area at 7 p.m. Friday in a WPIAL Division 2 quarterfinal game. The two teams did not play in the regular season. The winner of that game has a tall challenge in the semifinals as it faces the winner of another quarterfinal game between North Hills and Baldwin at 6 p.m. on May 22 at North Hills.
