Elizabeth Forward softball team makes it hit count
You are not going to win many WPIAL playoff games by only mustering one hit. You are certainly not going to win many games of anything with only one hit against a team as high-powered as Greensburg Salem.
Yet that is exactly what No. 9 seeded Elizabeth Forward (17-6) was able to do against No. 4 Greensburg Salem (15-3) in the WPIAL Class A semifinals. Warriors pitcher Portia McBride limited the Golden Lions to one run and her teammates bats found a way to scratch out two runs on Virginia Roche’s single in the bottom of the seventh inning to upset Greensburg Salem 2-1.
Roche’s single was the only hit Greensburg Salem pitcher Jayne Oberdorf gave up but she walked Katie Shinavski and McKenna Kern and both came around to score on the game-winning single. Elizabeth Forward will face Montour on Thursday in the WPIAL Class AAA championship game at 4:30 p.m. at California University.
