Doubles and sacrifices pave way for Elizabeth Forward softball team
Elizabeth Forward was shutout through the first four innings of its WPIAL first round game against Indiana.
Then a couple run scoring doubles in the fifth inning gave the Warriors a 3-1 lead and a couple sixth-inning sacrifice flies gave the team a 5-4 win over Indiana and a WPIAL Class AAA quarterfinals date with Ambridge Monday at 6 p.m. at North Allegheny.
Portia McBride was the winning pitcher for Elizabeth Forward. She struck out six and walked one.
Offensively it was Jen Keefer and Kelsey Havel doing the damage with fifth-inning doubles that drove in a combined three runs. In the sixth inning it was Caitlyn Arico and Courtney Hrabosky who came up with sacrifice flies for much needed insurance runs.
