Alumni Update - J.J. Hoover (Cincinnati Reds)

Written by John Perrotto on .

HooverJJCincinnati Reds rookie relief pitcher J.J. Hoover couldn't ask for a better start to his major-league career.

The Elizabeth Forwarad High School graduate has pitched in four games and not allowed a run in 4 2/3 innings since being recalled from Class AAA Louisville on April 24.  He has given up only one hit while walking two and striking out five.

Hoover, 24, was acquired from the Atlanta Braves' organization in a trade for third baseman Juan Francisco on April 1. Hoover had a 2.08 ERA in nine gmaes with Louisville, notching 17 strikeouts in just nine innings.

"Playing in the major leagues is what I've wanted to do since I was little," Hoover said. "It really is a dream come true. The trade couldn't have worked out any better for me because the Reds have given me the chance to prove I belong in the big leagues."

Hoover's latest appearance came Sunday when he pitched 2/3 of an inning and combined with Mat Latos, Aroldis Chapman and Alfredo Simon on a three-hit shutout as the Reds beat the Pirates 5-0 at PNC Park.

"I grew up as a Pirates' fan," Hoover said. "I liked Jay Bell, Doug Drabek, Andy Van Slyke, all of those guys. To be able to pitch against the Pirates was a big thrill."

Hoover was the Braves' 10th-round draft pick in 2008 from Calhoun (Ala.) Community College.
