Young Deer Lakes baseball team in tight section race

Written by Chris Adamski on .

The Deer Lakes baseball team, at times, has been starting seven sophomores. That's OK; the Lancers are still in position to make a run at qualifying for the WPIAL Class AA playoffs.

Deer Lakes was 4-3 in Section 3-AA play heading into a scheduled game Monday at Apollo-Ridge. That was a half-game out of third place (the final playoff spot available), only two games behind first-place Burrell and a game ahead of West Shamokin, which was in second-to-last place in the seven team section.

In short, anything can happen over the final week of the season.

"Each year we set out to win our section, but first and foremost we want to make the playoffs," coach Jon Pedrosky said. "Our section is very even this year, and it will be a dogfight to do either. We believe that we have the talent to be competitive for years to come. We set high expectations and standards last year, and we look to meet them each year. We have a great coaching staff in place -- (pitching coach) Josh Tysk, (outfield coach) Matt Beck and (bench coach) Chuck Bellisario."

The Lancers are the defending section champions and were a WPIAL Class AA quarterfinalist last season.

Junior Adam Fredley and senior Joe Hoffman are the team's top pitchers this season. Fredley, Todd Coleman and Kevin Begley are the Lancers' top hitters.
