He's Mr. Reliable for Deer Lakes baseball

Written by John D' Abruzzo on .

John D'Abruzzo's feature on Deer Lakes baseball:

"The past two seasons ended the same way for the Deer Lakes High School baseball team -- with quarterfinal losses against Riverside in the WPIAL Class AA playoffs.

That meant the Lancers could only sit back and watch as the Vikings went on to capture back-to-back PIAA championships.

"When we lost that game to Riverside last year, we knew we had a good team because we were only two outs away from staying in that game," senior Adam Fredley said. "Coming into this season, we knew we would have the talent and believed if we worked hard enough we could compete again.""

"For the Deer Lakes softball team this season, the usual suspects have stepped up and produced the usual results.

The defending WPIAL Class AA champions one-upped their 2012 15-1 regular season by finishing this regular season undefeated with a 16-0 record.

The core of this team, including catcher Hannah Blinn, shortstop Becca Babincak and outfielders Leanne Crawford and Courtney Lubick, all seniors, junior pitcher/first baseman Siera Sarver and pitcher Tiffany Edwards and second baseman Katie Gozzard, both sophomores, have started the past two seasons."

As the only team in Class AA with a first-round bye, Deer Lakes had to sit patiently Tuesday as everyone else in the WPIAL Class AA playoffs played. Now the Lancers, the 2012 WPIAL Class AA champions, can begin their title defense.

Top-seeded Deer Lakes (16-0) will play No. 9 McGuffey (15-5) on Monday at 5 p.m. at North Allegheny. McGuffey was a 5-4 winner over No. 8 Keystone Oaks in eight innings in the first round.
