Boyd will fill in for Howard at cornerback for Clairton football team
Clairton might be currently on a 61-game winning streak, but the Bears suffered a major loss last Friday when starting cornerback/wide receiver Titus Howard dislocated his left elbow in a 53-0 win against Berlin-Brothersvalley in a PIAA Class A quarterfinal game.
Howard, a Pitt recruit, will not play when Clairton (14-0) faces Port Allegany (13-0) Friday in a semifinal game at Deer Lakes. There is still a chance, however, that Howard might see action if the Bears advance to the championship for the fifth year in a row.
Clairton coach Tom Nola said Monday that star safety/running back Tyler Boyd will likely make his first career start at cornerback in place of Howard. Boyd has played cornerback at many 7-on-7 tournaments in past years. Boyd and the Clairton defense will be challenged by a high-scoring offense Port Allegany offense led by the state’s all-time leading passer, Matt Bodamer.
“Tyler is going to have to [make a major impact] not only on offense, but also on defense,” said Nola. “He’s a good enough athlete. He seems to cover just as well as anybody we’ve got.”
