Clairton football team refocuses for state title run
Just about every local high school football fan knows that Clairton broke the PIAA record for wins in a row by defeating Sto-Rox, 58-21, in last Friday’s WPIAL Class A championship at Heinz Field.
What no one knows is if the Bears will be able to win their fourth consecutive PIAA title just over two weeks from now.
Clairton (13-0) will begin its run at a fifth consecutive appearance in the PIAA championship when it takes on District 5 champion Berlin-Brothersvalley (11-1) in a quarterfinal game tomorrow at Somerset at 7 p.m.
Clairton has been dominant in PIAA playoff openers the past four seasons, winning by scores of 44-0, 52-0, 46-0 and 26-0. All of those victories came against teams from District 5.
The Bears continue to be led by senior running back Tyler Boyd, who rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns against Sto-Rox. Senior quarterback Armani Ford threw for 180 yards and three touchdowns.
