Second quarter key to Clairton's big win over Serra in boys basketball
When Clairton and Serra Catholic met on Jan. 20, it was a poorly-played second quarter that played a huge role in the Bears losing in overtime, 65-63.
In that game, Clairton held a 15-7 lead late in the first quarter, but Serra went on a 15-0 run to go ahead and eventually led by 11 points at the half.
But in the rematch last Friday with a share of the section title on the line, a strong second quarter helped lead Clairton to a huge 76-64 win.
Clairton led visiting Serra, 19-12, after the first quarter, and then outscored the Eagles, 16-13, in the second quarter. Bryon Clifford, who scored a team-high 22 points, tallied 7 points in the quarter. The three-point advantage might not sound like much, but considering what happened in the first meeting, it was pivotal.
“The second quarter was vital for us,” said Clairton coach Von Pitts. “We were able to sustain our lead and never give it up to Serra. That was the biggest thing, the big difference.”
Clairton (12-6, 9-1) and Serra (15-7, 9-1) will find out tonight who they will face in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs, which begin later this week.
