Girls’ Cross Country: South Feature Athlete – Chartiers Valley’s April Bittner

Written by Cara DeCarlo on .

Important note: Normally, Sports Town runs one boys’ cross country and one girls’ cross country featured athlete per week for each zone (i.e., North, South, East, or West). Recently, we’ve had a great coaches’ response regarding some our girls’ cross country runners in the South. Likewise, Sports Town is posting the achievements of two female cross country athletes this week. We’ll go back to the boy/girl format next week.

Name: April Bittner
High School: Chartiers Valley
Grade 12:
Sport: Cross Country

Background Info: Bittner is a four-year runner with Chartiers Valley cross country. She is a leader on the girls’ varsity squad, and she is dedicated to her training and her teammates.

Interestingly, Bittner organized a kids’ triathlon (in the summer of 2012). The triathlon was a fundraiser to benefit Autism Speaks, and it raised $1600. Bittner’s role in the triathlon event was as Volunteer Coordinator – she recruited and coordinated the volunteers, gathered sponsors, and coordinated the raffle items for the event.

On top of Bittner’s Volunteer Coordinator job, she led the girls’ team on summer training runs. Bittner is well liked and respected by all her teammates.

Quotes from head coach Lori Poe: "April is one of the most positive athletes I have ever coached. She always gives 110 percent in everything she does and first to cheer on her teammates. She is one of our top runners on the team and leads by example.”
