Char-Houston's Conwell is PG's Female Athlete of the Week
Chartiers-Houston pitcher Kiersten Conwell is the Post-Gazette's Female Athlete of the Week on June 9.
This week: Conwell had 13 strikeouts in leading the Bucs to a 9-3 win against Fort Cherry in the WPIAL softball championship game. Monday, she pitched a two-hitter in a 12-0 PIAA first-round win against Smethport. The Bucs are the defending champions.
Check this out: Conwell, a senior pitcher, has put up some jaw-dropping numbers while helping undefeated Chartiers-Houston reach the PIAA Class A quarterfinals. Conwell is 21-0 with 194 strikeouts and a 0.12 ERA. She had not allowed an earned run until last week. Offensively, Conwell is hitting .474. She is a Mount Aloysius recruit.
• Is this the best team you have been a part of? I would say so. I just feel like we're a lot stronger than we were in other years.
• Name one thing you and your teammates joke around about with coach [Tricia] Alderson? We always say she has a boyfriend. We say that because Mr. Alderson is there. (Dan Alderson is Tricia's husband and an assistant coach).
• Do you ever do anything to try to get into an opposing batter's head? Not really. I just try to hit my spots.
• Favorite professional athlete? [U.S. Olympic softball pitcher] Cat Osterman.
• Do you watch the College Softball World Series? Yeah, I do. My parents love to watch it, too.
• How many Pirates games do you think you'll make it to this season? I'll probably go to like five of them.
• When you have a craving for fast food, where do you go and what do you order? I'd probably go to Taco Bell and get a chicken quesadilla.
• Which fast food restaurant has the best french fries? McDonald's.
