Chartiers-Houston's Timko runs into 1st-round buzzsaw at PIAA tennis singles tournament
Over the years, Tanya Timko has more than proven she can play with the boys -- the best of them, in fact. Unfortunately for the Chartiers-Houston senior, Timko's first match at the PIAA singles tournament was against the VERY best player around, at least this year.
Timko lost to eventual champion Doug Caplan of Harrisburg Academy, 6-0, 6-2, this past Friday at the Hershey Racquet Club. Considering Caplan blew through his next two opponents by similar scores (including a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the semifinals), the result hardly was evidence that Timko didn't belong at the tournament.
Timko, in fact, lost only two matches all boys tennis season -- and they came to the two PIAA finalists. Her other defeat was to D.J. Goldblum of Winchester Thurston in the WPIAL tournament semifinals. Goldblum took the silver medal at the PIAA tournament.
